Sometimes you just need to marvel at city life. New York- a place where it's possible to throw a 100th birthday party for a Chinese socialite who hobnobbed with gangsters and royalty in Shanghai in the early 1930s. Where the florist for that party buys 9 varieties of peonies and hangs dozens of hand painted lanterns to decorate an exceedingly fancy private club uptown. Where the florist for the same party finds herself at the 11th hour in the backseat of a cab with the party's host, a client of legendary status among the Brooklyn flower scene, buying armloads of peonies at the grocery store for some extra something.

I'm attempting peace in the city, even if my personal life doesn't contain parties at private uptown clubs. Do you like wearing pantyhose? Cause that's what you have to do at those places. This month is my official 10 year anniversary of New York living, and while it makes me crazy, I feel lucky to have come as a teenager and grown up a bit here. Watching the sunset over manhattan from the roof, eating $3 falafel sandwiches and finally finding a girl to set up quickbooks online- city pleasures come in all varieties and I'm ready to stop being picky about where I find them.

I want to bury my nose in those flowers.
ReplyDeleteThe colours are refreshing refreshing refreshing.
Clean. Crisp. Beautiful.
I'd love to do city living again - I miss London but more so would LOVE to live in your city. The country's been good to us - giving us freedom of running our own company and buying a house but oh my how I miss the city! one day.
ReplyDeleteThose flowers are just amazing! And Happy 10 years!
Beautiful! I'd just like to live somewhere cosmopolitan enough for peonies to be sold at the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteI so loved reading this, your words are full of delicate beauty and I find myself nodding to your notions of the pleasure of leading a city life. In fact a few years back we bought ourselves an old wooden house and left town, only to return a couple of years later with a realisation that the city is where we belong (albeit a much much smaller one than yours, but the biggest size that they come in this country anyway :)). (But to have a country hideway in addition to a city apartment, now that would strike the perfect balance... )
ReplyDeleteP.S. Peonies are my favourites & the picture with the Chinese lanterns is just perfection!
Your arrangements are beautiful. I love the idea of finding little pleasures in all the places we find ourselves. Beautiful post.

Wowsa! Those flowers are gorgeous. One day, I dream of trying out being a florist, but for now I'll stick to the scientific side of flowers as a botany student. If you are interested, please check out my new blog! I'm trying to make a space where I can share my love of botany and vintage wonders. It's not much now, but there'll will be lots of flower photos to come!

Goodness me; THAT IS Peony Heaven at its best and purest...I LOVE them and I've seen quite a bit of peonies in my life but NEVER ever have I seen such a profusion of different kinds and in those glorious colours. This is well and truly extra-ordinary! Wouldn't care for the hustle and bustle of NY though nor for the high-life of the kind of parties you get called. BUT your flower arrangements are so superbe, so incredibly and touchingly beautiful, your photos so wonderful, it's unbelievable. And is it really true: Can you get peonies in supermarkets? This sounds like flower eldorado to me. Thank you so much for all this - I can smell it from here in France nr Paris!
ReplyDeletejust thought i'd say that besides the obvious fact that you are magic with flowers i also really appreciate and enjoy your writing style. even though there's a literal sea of blogs out there now, it's getting harder and harder to find ones that are genuine and really give you glimpses into the person behind them. too much of the time it feels like people are trying so hard to portray this image of a BLOG GIRL that they lose any true personality. but yours is so the opposite of that. anyways, thank you for your posts and for restoring my faith in blogging a little bit this morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kennedy, I'm really happy you appreciate it. You are the queen of cool girls, so yessss! Means a lot.
DeleteWhat a wonderful ride you are on. I love to get little glimpses of NYC from your perspective. It is always a delight checking in with your blog. An apple a day really is good for you!
ReplyDeleteVery nice post thanks for sharing the beautiful blog and keep on updating the blog.Beautiful Post!!

Oh the romance and beauty... sigh. I am a fellow flower worshipper. How nice to drop in behind New York doors and see that pretty blooms everywhere ... even when you're a 100!
ReplyDeleteShit, that photo that looks like a wall of peonies.... I don't have words.
ReplyDeleteI love reading about someone growing up in my favourite city in the world, I can't think of a better place to come of age.
And surely no one likes wearing pantyhose?
Oh my goodness, those peonies are unbelievably, breathtakingly, stunningly beautiful! You live the perfect life---surrounded by luscious flowers at work, then off to the country for play!
ReplyDeleteI miss New York so much when I read this. Can't wait to go there again!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds surreal - it sounds like it could only be NY. Makes my heart sing. As always.
ReplyDeletePantyhose? NO.
ReplyDeletePirates? YES.
(They're over at my place. Come on, what are you waiting for?)
Sounds like quite an experience - the 100 yr old Chinese socalite! I, too, want to know more about her...I'm imagining the great 1930s Shanghai bw snapshots she probably has (!!!) You have such a nice voice in your writing, and I appreciate that you embrace the perfect imperfections in the flowers - the wildness.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't mind - what location was the event? The light looks amazing!
These arrangements are so utterly stunningly wild, and what an experience you had.

What a joy !
ReplyDeleteAll those pretty flowers in their fullest bloom a few shades away from dying make a wonderful photo. The flowers are, as always, impeccable.
ReplyDeleteI have always find your city anecdotes very relatable and interesting. But, of course, my favorite will always be your Elmwood posts.
Well, about pantyhose and private clubs, that would be a rather sketchy picture but it sure is interesting. :)
I love the subtlty of dying flowers! The texture and the colours are so beautiful. I also like how the outcomes are not reliable in the slightest! xx
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful collection of flower pictures ..!!
